We had a huge response! 0% said "I think most are technically competent" 100% said "I think most are not technically competent" 0% said "I don't know" Comments included: "I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have always thought that all legislators should be proficient in at least some of the sciences. In fact, there is NO job description for our elected officials (there should be). I have always assumed that people with no actual skills end up being politicians, sports writers or lawyers (excluding some in patent law)." "I think it is more important for the legislators to have "common" (uncommon) sense, and integrity, such that they decide and implement recommendations from the technical experts resident within their departments. They should have a strong interest at least in the general subject matter of their portfolio. I think the UK comedy series "Yes Minister" portrays it best." "Technically incompetent can work if they listen to competent staff." "I do not think that most legislators are technically competent. In addition to some technical knowledge, I think that legislators, and hence the people that they represent, would benefit if the legislators had some business management and accounting skills, too.
