In the first one, that was shown in your newsletter, I used your calculation for volume of the atmosphere, (from December 2008) but I made a small mistake using 3,82 instead of 3,84. In the next calculation I did, I used the area of the earth instead, and the air pressure and air density, to get an even better calculation of the amount of air. This was not so far from what you did get, just showing that you made a good approximation. I do agree with you, that this greenhouse business is difficult things, just like your example from structural engineering. Like your example the carbon story is also a safety issue, well worth taking seriously, we can not just say that this is complicated to calculate so we keep on as always. We don't do that when coming to structural engineering.. Case to point, Back about 1967, I was a young process chemist with the task of designing a lab at a rather large papermill. The present lab was in the way of a 2nd papermachines rewinder, so the task of designing the replacement lab layout and furnishing fell to me and the lab technicians that were to man the lab. In the new lab, after having run an experiment, I was washing a beaker, about a 250 ml size. Had the wash cloth inside the beaker with 3 fingers of my right hand when the beaker came apart in my hand. I still have the scar where the glass laid open the ring finger on my right hand. A trip to the doctor in Blakely where the doctor installed about 6 stitches to close the wound. I had no idea that the beaker was cracked. Here at the mill in Pensacola, we had a lab employee to open a cabinet and a bottle of concentrated nitric acid exploded and sprayed him from the knees down.
