Problem solving tools

Jan 16, 2015 at 09:45 am by admin

Your 1/15/2015 NI reminded of what one my early career mentors told me, "There really aren't many new problems around; they may be new to you or old ones disguised in one way or another. So look around for someone who might have already solved it or can help you see it a different way." Over the years, my experience substantiated the value of his counsel.

Using that advice I found my contact list to be priceless. I kept a card file, of course, but I also kept a notebook in which I made an entry every time I communicated (telephone, letter, v-mail, etc----this was pre-mail) with a new contact whose interests paralleled mine. I found this list of Supts., Engineers, Managers, Vendors, Professors, and others to be of untold value over my years. Back then it seemed that each of us was at the ready to help when a call for help was placed.

No doubt this problem-solving tool was not so fast nor inclusive as Google, but some long-standing relationships were cultivated there while Google still asks for my password.

Good pointer for those still fighting low brightness, wet wrinkles, holes and the like.

****Thanks, Chuck. We have the entire TALOtech Group Suite on LinkedIn (51 groups) that break the process down into small unit operations. You are most welcome to join any of them. - Jim
