PORT EDWARDS, Wisconsin (From the Wisconsin Rapids Tribune) -- Numerous emergency crews responded to a fire near the former Domtar paper mill late Friday afternoon, according to the Wood County Dispatch Center.

Firefighters from Port Edwards, Nekoosa and Grand Rapids were dispatched to the site at 100 Wisconsin River Drive just before 4 p.m. First responders from Saratoga also were called.

A debris pile reportedly caught fire, according to a police officer on the scene.

Heavy black and dark gray smoke was visible in the area of the fire, but much of that smoke dissipated with an hour.
